What is Azure Hybrid Benefit?
The Azure Hybrid Benefit (AHB) is a powerful offering that allows you to leverage your existing Windows Server or SQL Server licenses on Azure, provided you have active Software Assurance (SA). This means you avoid the cost of purchasing new Microsoft licenses and only pay for the underlying compute infrastructure.
Understanding Software Assurance
Software Assurance is more than just a licensing program; it’s an investment in your IT future. By participating in this program, you gain:
- Upgrade Rights: Stay current with the latest technology.
- Comprehensive Support: Get assistance when you need it.
- Training Opportunities: Enhance your team's skills.
- License Mobility: This key feature allows you to transfer your existing Windows Server or SQL Server licenses to Azure, maximising your investment. For more details, check out the Microsoft Software Assurance | Microsoft Volume Licensing
Realising Savings with Windows Server
Did you know that by using AHB for Windows Server, you can save up to 40% on virtual machines by bringing a qualifying server in line with Linux OS pricing? When paired with Reserved Instances, the savings increase even further! Explore Azure Hybrid Benefit for Windows VMs - Azure Virtual Machines | Microsoft Learn to understand how to use AHB and any limitations.
SQL Server: Even Greater Savings
AHB extends its advantages to SQL workloads as well, including:
- SQL Server on Azure Virtual Machines
- Azure SQL Database (vCore-based, provisioned tiers)
- Azure SQL Managed Instance
Microsoft reports that customers can achieve savings of up to 55% on SQL workloads with Azure Hybrid Benefit.. Explore more detail in Azure Hybrid Benefit - Azure SQL Database & SQL Managed Instance | Microsoft Learn.
Note: Workloads that use AHB for Windows Server can run only during the Software Assurance or subscription license term. When the Software Assurance or subscription license term approaches expiration, you must renew your agreement with either Software Assurance or a subscription license, disable the AHB for Windows Server functionality, or deprovision workloads that use AHB for Windows Server.
Efficient License Management at Scale
For larger organisations, managing licenses can be a challenge. Fortunately, AHB allows for centralised management at the subscription or billing scope. This streamlines the process of assigning licenses where needed, tracking utilisation, and preventing over or under-use.
