The Fabric Conference held in Las Vegas in April 2025 was a monumental event, marking the continuous progress in innovation and technological advancements. The conference, renowned for its forward-thinking approach, brought together industry leaders, tech enthusiasts, and enterprises from around the globe. This year's announcements aim to improve user capabilities and enterprise efficiency.
Here are some of the headline improvements that are coming to Fabric and how you can expect to benefit from them:
OneLake Security – A Game Changer in Data Protection
Managing data security across various platforms or semantic models can be complicated, resulting in either excessive restrictions or unintended data exposure. OneLake Security is Microsoft Fabric’s centralized approach for data protection.
What does this mean?
Define Once, Enforce Everywhere – Set security rules at the lake level, and these rules are automatically applied across SQL Endpoints, Spark notebooks, and Power BI.
Granular Data Access – Data owners can control access to specific rows and columns, ensuring users only see authorized information like Personally Identifiable Information (PII).
With OneLake Security, admins set rules once, and Fabric enforces them everywhere, keeping data secure and governance simple.
AI Skills is now Data agents!
Microsoft Fabric now features data agents (previously AI Skills) which are AI-powered assistants that retrieve, understand, and analyse data to help teams make faster, smarter decisions—without needing constant manual input. These agents can connect to multiple data sources, learn from patterns, and take actions based on real-time insights.
What does this mean?
Organizations can leverage Microsoft Fabric and Azure AI Foundry to develop smart, intuitive AI agents.
Azure AI Foundry connects conversational agents from Microsoft Fabric with Azure AI Agent Service, merging advanced data analysis with generative AI to create accurate, relevant, and context-aware AI agents.
This integration combines Fabric’s data analysis with Azure AI’s models, unlocking new potential for conversational AI in business workflows.
Copilot for Everyone: Now Available on All Paid SKUs
Great news coming in for all Fabric users – Copilot and AI features are rolling out to all paid SKUs, starting from F2 and above (by the end of April 2025). Based on community feedback, Microsoft is advancing AI in Fabric to enhance accessibility and productivity for all users.
What does this mean?
Teams now have access to AI-assisted workflows, Fabric data agents, and smart insights without requiring premium tiers. Copilot can assist in building reports, managing data, or exploring insights, providing support to expedite tasks efficiently.
Seamlessly migrate your data to Fabric
Preview of a migration experience natively built into the Fabric UI, enabling Azure Synapse Analytics (data warehouse) customers to transition seamlessly to Microsoft Fabric. For users trying to migrate data into Fabric, this experience offers significant benefits
What does this mean?
Intelligent Assessment: The tool ensures error-free migration by evaluating existing data and code.
Guided Support: Users receive easy, step-by-step instructions throughout migration.
AI-Powered Assistance: AI aids in quickly utilizing Fabric's unified data, analytics, and performance.
Enhanced Performance: Fabric offers advanced data analysis and faster processing.
Simplified Migration: Traditional complexities are reduced, focusing on Fabric's powerful features.
These features collectively ensure that users can efficiently migrate their data to Fabric and start utilising its advanced capabilities immediately.
